Raina Telgemeier is the author and illustrator of the graphic novels Smile, Sisters, Drama, and Ghosts, all 1 New York Times bestsellers. However, Lexile does not take into account the content of a novel. ![]() A Lexile score is a measure of both a child’s reading ability and a text difficulty. Lexile is a score that helps educators and parents match students with an appropriate text. It doesn’t contain any mature content and is perfect for any upper elementary or middle school reader! PAGES: 224 LEXILE: GN410L ![]() Every student will see themselves in Raina (even if their teeth haven’t fallen out!), and they will connect with Raina’s unashamed honesty about the many ups and downs of adolescence. The novel chronicles several years of Raina’s life where she finds her voice, changes schools, makes real friends, and finally rebuilds her smile. Navigating middle school drama isn’t easy for anyone, but it’s especially challenging when your friends are rude, you’re wearing dentures, and many days are spent in a dental chair or in pain from countless dental procedures. In this graphic novel, Raina writes about her own experiences in middle and high school after an accidental fall knocked her two front teeth out. In Smile, Raina Telgemeier expertly crafts and illustrates a classic coming-of-age story with a unique twist-missing teeth! I finally get why this book never stays on my bookshelf! I’d been meaning to read this title for ages, but I literally could never wrestle it away from my students. ![]()

Simply and charmingly told, this is a wry tale, a sly tale, and a story of wisdom delightfully askew. It feels in poor taste to give a star rating to such an intensely personal memoir, and especially one that is both written and illustrated by the subject. Over time, Burgess, who uses they/them pronouns, comes to understand and embrace their identity as an asexual person.Īs a settled asexual woman in her thirties, personally I found How to Be Ace too didactic to be satisfying, but it’s an important resource that will appeal both to those looking to learn about asexuality and to younger readers questioning whether or not they belong on the asexual spectrum. How to Be Ace: A Memoir of Growing Up Asexual by Rebecca BurgessĪn intimate journey through author/illustrator Rebecca Burgess’ childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood, How to Be Ace explores Burgess’ attempts to navigate a sex-obsessed culture and fit in with their peers. ![]() ![]() I have to add that I love the distinction you make between storytelling as opposed to the broad term "author." I may try adopting that moniker during those times when I get bogged down with being totally historically accurate, to the detriment of the story itself (it's hard to restrain that part of my graduate training, even for the sake of the plot and/or character development). I love that you're grappling with those issues in your novels, and you can bet I'll be picking up the first Lanie book as soon as I can! But I also love the 20s in the US, since it's such a decade of contrasts-the rich and glamorous lifestyles against some very major cultural crises (such as the public perception of differences between cultures and "races," one that often informed people's opinions on politics and even science). I have an academic background in history (my emphasis was WWI Britain) and am working on a novel set in that period. Persia, I can't believe I haven't picked up your books yet, because you hit on so many things I love as a reader-the historic setting, and the psychological underpinnings behind human behavior and cultural experience. ![]() ![]() Devotional reading is beneficial, but it is not foundational, and its benefit actually increases exponentially as we grow in our foundational understanding of the Bible. ![]() This may mean we limit our time in the word to devotional reading–meditating on a passage and looking for a way to put it to immediate use. We may rush to find an application point we can act on in whatever time we have. Sylvia returns with the sequel and conclusion to Jax and Gia’s story and it was wonderful. There is some great hotness here, narrator was good as always. ![]() It is easy to be mad a Jax in the beginning but once we know the whole story we love him and forgive him, at least I did, it took Gia longer. This story is short so there isn't a ton of depth, I would have read more from this couple but that said, I liked them. That said, you really can't complain about Sylvia Day! There is a difference in quality, style and ability when we are reading from her. So this is 2 shorts in 1 which I appreciate!! Thank you for putting them together! I will almost never get a book under 7 hours unless it is really cheap and a part of a series. ![]() |
